Nicole’s love of music started at a very young age. She always had a great ear for music and started piano lessons when she was 8 years old. She began singing with her church choir soon after. She began taking voice lessons in middle school and joined her school’s choir, musical theater, and band programs where she fell in love with the saxophone and jazz.
Nicole focused on the saxophone and instrumental music through high school where she was the lead tenor saxophonist in the jazz band and advanced wind ensembles. She was the drum major for her high school marching band and performed at the state solo and ensemble festival.
She went on to study Music Performance with a concentration in Saxophone at Grove City College in Pennsylvania where she sang with the college chapel choir and directed her school’s gospel choir for three years. While there, she discovered a love of English Choral Music and became an advocate for the importance of choral music in a time when contemporary styles of worship and performance were becoming more and more prevalent.
After she left school, Nicole’s access to music dramatically reduced. A slew of health concerns and difficult work schedules meant that her access to the arts was heavily limited for about 10 years. She found time to sing with friends and enjoyed volunteering in her church’s tech department.
Finally, in 2020, Nicole decided to re-immerse herself in the arts. She found a job at a local music school and was eventually able to resume singing lessons. Being around musicians again was a blessing after being unable to connect with an arts group for so long. In 2022, she attended the symphony again for the first time in several years and vowed to start performing again. After months of research, Nicole found the Arizona Masterworks Chorale- an organization dedicated to excellence in choral music and a focus on English Choral Music, one of her favorite genres. She joined the chorale for the 2023-2024 season and looks forward to an exciting future of performance.
What are your “day job” and Interests?
Why is it important for you to be a member of AMC?
AMC has given me the opportunity to perform and be involved in music for the first time in over a decade. It’s been a huge blessing to be around other musicians and work on challenging and absolutely gorgeous music together. When looking for a group, it was incredibly important to be part of an organization that is dedicated to both artistic excellence and vocal health, which are two of AMC’s biggest goals.
What impact do you want AMC to have on the community?
I am an avid supporter of the impact that choral music has on the people who hear and participate in it. I would love to see choral music become more accessible to people of all ages and experience levels.
